The Anthony M. DiGioia, Jr Memorial Scholarship Program

Initiated by the AMD3 Foundation

Born Aug. 24, 1934, Anthony M. DiGioia Jr., Ph.D. was raised above his immigrant father's tailor shop on Lincoln Avenue in the Lincoln-Lemington section of Pittsburgh. Family members said his was a classic Italian-American story, with three siblings, summers spent playing baseball, earning the nickname "Dietz" while manning second base, and attending Central Catholic High School. Little did they know that Dietz would grow up to become a world-renowned engineer and successful business entrepreneur.

He studied engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University. At CMU, he participated in the school's Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, and earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering. After completing his education, he remained in Pittsburgh and built a successful career as a businessman and engineering consultant.

As a scholarship recipient, all costs of the trip will be fully covered including flights, in-country transportation, hotel, and most meals.

Despite winning countless professional awards and founding two successful companies, Tony always insisted that his greatest accomplishment, achieved alongside of his wife, Carole, was raising a family of eight children who went on to professional and personal successes.

Tony and Carole were also proud supporters of Operation Walk Pittsburgh. Tony Jr. served on the board of directors for the Foundation for many years and played an active role in helping the organization to grow in its capacity to deliver bone and joint health education and free care to those in need, both here in Pittsburgh and abroad.

In keeping with his dedication to service and education, the Anthony M. DiGioia, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Program has been established by his family to support orthopaedic residents and fellows in-training so that they can join the Operation Walk Pittsburgh travel team and experience the very special, educational opportunity that an Operation Walk mission trip provides.  As a scholarship recipient, all costs of the trip will be fully covered including flights, in-country transportation, hotel, and most meals.

The application period for Mission 2024 is now closed.
